Sammy Wilson accused of abusing position as chair of Education Committee

17 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, Lagan Valley MLA Paul Butler has accused the Chairperson of the Assembly Education Committee Sammy Wilson of abusing his position and allowing narrow party self-interest to undermine the constructive relationship with the Minister.

Mr Butler said:

"I know that many within the Education Committee are becoming increasingly annoyed with Sammy Wilson's inability to behave as a proper chair to the committee. His agenda is increasingly driven by narrow party self-interest.

"Continual insult and haranguing of the Minister does nothing to develop the constructive relationship we need in order to carry out the work of the committee properly. Particularly as deal with some of the big issues affecting education including post primary transfer the approach of Sammy Wilson will only undermine our effectiveness in being able achieve the best outcome for all of our children."
