Orde should withdraw TASERS immediately - Anderson

20 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Policing Board Member, Martina Anderson MLA (Foyle) has called on Hugh Orde to reconsider his position on the acquisition of TASERS in light of the death of a man in Bedford, England.

Martina Anderson commented:

"The death yesterday of a young man in his thirties in Bedford, England is further evidence that the TASER is a lethal weapon. Despite our warnings that these are deadly weapons, Hugh Orde insisted on going ahead with his intention to introduce TASERS for use here and recently began a pilot scheme.

"I am once more, calling on Hugh Orde to reconsider his decision to go ahead with the deployment of these lethal weapons in light of this latest death resulting from the use of TASER. The pilot scheme should be halted immediately. ENDS
