Glenadden Shirt factory‏

18 January, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has said that the latest job losses in Derry are a stark warning that manufacturing industry in the North West will become extinct unless urgent action is taken.

Ms Anderson said,

"The news that 85 people are to lose their jobs at Glenadden Shirt factory is a devastating blow to the region coming so soon after Seagate announced that over 1000 people would lose their jobs in the summer.

"Unless urgent action is taken the remaining manufacturing base in the North West will continue to fritter away until it becomes extinct.

"Sinn Fein is on record of calling on both the Irish and British Governments to designate the North West region an area of special economic need which will not only attract inward investment but also protect the remaining manufacturing jobs.

"This is also a reason why we need to pursue the 'Stand Up For Derry' Campaign because unless Derry people mobilise to promote our region and ensure that it is treated equally when it comes to inward investment no one else will." ENDS
