Bizarre twist in deportation case welcomed - Maskey MLA

21 January, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has welcomed a bizarre twist of fate which has resulted in a temporary reprieve for Comfort Adefowoju and her family.

The family have been told they cannot fly today as a ticket was not bought for Comfort's baby.

Mr Maskey said,

"I welcome this bizarre twist of fate and believe now is the time for the legal challenge against this deportation.

"However, I am angry at the incompetence of the Home Office who brought a single mother and four young children, the youngest only 10 months, to Heathrow at 3.30 am and caused immense stress and trauma to them and their friends in Ireland.

"The Home Office have questions to answer on this human rights issue.

"Comfort is now returning to Yarl's Wood draconian detention centre and Sinn Féin shall re-double their efforts to make sure this family return to Belfast where they belong.

"I believe a strong united public voice against this threatened deportation of a single mother and children and against the British Home Office's intransigence, lack of compassion and short sightedness on this issue is necessary.

"I urge everyone to attend the vigil at 12pm to support this human rights issue." Deireadh/Ends
