Equality proofing needed for Irish language funding - McElduff MLA

22 January, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA and chair of the Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee, Barry McElduff has said that equality proofing is needed for Irish language funding.

Speaking following the budget allocation to the Arts, Mr McElduff said,

"There is considerable anger throughout Ireland at the lack of vision and delivery on the Irish language from Minister Poots.

"It is Sinn Féin's belief that Edwin Poots has not afforded the Irish language the funding it needs and deserves.

"However, there will now be an Equality Impact Assessment on the Budget. This will be issued for public consultation. Following consultation the final EQIA will be published which will inform the delivery and review of this funding over the next three years.

"It is Sinn Féin's intention to vigorously pursue this issue of sustainability for the Irish language broadcast fund any the other Irish language projects and believe now is the time to intensify the campaign for language rights.

"Minister Poots has a moral and political responsibility to the many thousands of Irish Language speakers to provide for their linguistic needs." ENDS
