DUP is out of sync with public opinion - Anderson MLA

22 January, 2008

Responding to comments by DUP MLA Peter Weir lambasting a recent Human Rights Consortium opinion poll in favour of a Bill of Rights, Sinn Féin Human Rights and Equality spokesperson Martina Anderson has that he is out of sync with public opinion.

Ms Anderson said:

"Peter Weir is out of sync with public opinion. 75% of those interviewed for this opinion poll are in favour of a Bill of Rights that protects the rights of everyone as envisaged in the Good Friday Agreement

"This is an unhelpful input by a public representative who is doing a serious disservice to DUP voters.

"Mr Weir's comments around the membership of the Bill of Rights Forum are also disappointing.

"By their nature worldwide, Bills of Rights have positively benefited and contributed to the democratic structures of governance and to the generation of societies where human rights and equality are visibly valued.

"Peter Weir must see that our vision is based squarely on the basis of seeking a Bill of Rights that upholds and protects the rights of the poorest and most marginalised in our society." Críoch
