End Israeli Embargo Now - Adams MP MLA

23 January, 2008

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has called on the Israeli Government to immediately end its harsh blockade of Gaza.

He has also urged the International community to use its enormous economic and political influence on the Israeli government to end a blockade that is the cause of a major humanitarian crisis.

Mr. Adams said:

"The one day relaxation of the blockade by the Israeli government is insufficient to end the humanitarian crisis.

"Moreover the current Israeli strategic approach is entirely counter-productive to the goal of achieving a political agreement between Israelis and Palestinians.

"Collective punishment of the citizens of Gaza will not make it easier but more difficult to secure any agreement.

"The International community has a huge responsibility to end this.

"The EU and the Irish government in particular have the ability to use their preferential trade arrangements with Israel to more assertively persuade it to enter into a meaningful dialogue with all Palestinians to achieve an agreement." Críoch
