Increase in reported rapes worrying statistic - Jennifer McCann MLA‏

24 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Party Spokesperson on Women, Jennifer McCann MLA (West Belfast) has expressed concern at the recent rape statistics that claim that rape and attempted rape reports have increased by 50 per cent in the past 6 years.

Ms McCann said:

"Given that rape and attempted rape are among the most under reported crimes it is worrying to see such a sharp increase in these figures.

"Rape and Sexual assault are violent crimes and must be treated as such by the PSNI, Criminal Justice System and society as a whole.

"There also needs to be adequate support systems put in place that are easily and readily accessible to survivors of rape and sexual assault.

"The Executive recently committed to ensuring that there are effective programmes and strategies aimed at eradicating all forms of violence against women in the Programme for Government. These commitments must be delivered on.

"Working in conjunction with the 'End Violence Against Women Coalition' I have already arranged a meeting for February 5th where I will be asking MLA's to come together to establish an All Party Group to discuss how we as policy makers can take forward an integrated approach to tackle this issue ."
