Equality is the watchword in Programme for Government

28 January, 2008

Speaking in the first day of debate on the Programme for Government and Investment Strategy in the Assembly on Monday Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has said that 'Equality is the watchword in Programme for Government'.

Mr McLaughlin said:

"Sinn Féin welcomes the Programme for Government - particularly its commitment to ensuring that all Executive policies will be based on fairness, inclusion and equality - watchwords that Sinn Féin worked studiously to have included.

"There are several issues on which the Assembly and indeed, the Executive Committee must be able to deliver in the new social, economic and political reality. And of course these issues must be addressed within the financial limitations of the block grant placed on our ability to respond to such challenges. Taxation and public-expenditure policies are set in London and are therefore inextricably linked to our ability to deliver.

"The policies that we are attempting to deliver today demand a more flexible and creative response from British Treasury officials and the British Government. The Assembly can deliver, but requires the tools to do so. We must continue our efforts to bring home the maximum of fiscal powers as is required." ENDS
