McCartney welcomes Ministers commitment to Derry/Coleraine line

29 January, 2008 - by Raymond McCartney

Speaking following yesterday's debate in the Assembly on the Programme for Government and Investment Strategy, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Regional Development, Raymond McCartney welcomed the Minister, Conor Murphy's commitment to the development of the Derry/Coleraine stretch of railway line.

Mr McCartney said:

"I welcome the Minister's comments in the Assembly yesterday when he once more spelt out his commitment to investment in the North West.

"Conor Murphy stated that he has secured £1 million in the Budget to allow a business case to be put together for upgrading the Derry/Coleraine track. He also reiterated his clear intention to secure £64 million of investment in the project, which will begin in 2011 - within the lifetime of this Assembly.

"On completion of the track relay between Coleraine and Derry, the line will have been improved sufficiently to reduce journey times by 30 minutes. By then, two additional trains will be deployed on the line and it will allow commuter trains to arrive in Derry before 9.00 am." ENDS
