Minister must take action as Allergen becomes latest company to announce job losses - Morgan

30 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Job Creation and Workers' Rights Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has sought debate on the adjournment of the Dáil on the recent spate of job losses across the state including today's announcement that Arklow based pharmaceutical plant Allergen is to close next year with the loss of 360 jobs.

Speaking in the Dáil today Deputy Morgan said, "Today's announcement that Arklow based pharmaceutical plant Allergen is to close next year with the loss of 360 jobs comes on the back of recent announcements of job losses of 220 at the Jacobs Fruitfield Factory in Tallaght and 240 job losses at the Dawn Meats plant in Ballaghaderreen in County Roscommon.

"The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mícheál Martin must outline what steps, if any, were taken to avert these job losses. And, he must explain to this house what steps are being taken to create alternative employment for those affected." ENDS
