de Brún backs European Parliament call on Climate Change

30 January, 2008 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP and member of the European Parliament's Climate Change committee has backed MEPs' calls for the EU to become a world leader in the fight against climate change.

Ms de Brún was speaking as the parliament discussed the outcome of the recent climate change talks in Bali.

"I fully support today's calls from MEPs to make the European Union the most progressive part of the world when it comes to climate change. Important achievements were accomplished in Bali but that counts for nothing unless the governments live up to their word and get serious about reducing carbon emissions."

The parliament welcomed the decision taken at Bali to begin a formal negotiation process for an international climate agreement for after the end of the Kyoto agreement in 2012. Críoch
