EU ban on Brazilian Beef was only option

30 January, 2008

Sinn Féin Agriculture Spokesperson, West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has said that the EU decision to impose a temporary ban on the importation of beef from Brazil was the only available option.

Mr Doherty also paid tribute to the tenacious campaign led by the Irish Farmers Association.

Pat Doherty said:

"The announcement this afternoon by Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou that imports would not be permitted because of concerns over the origin of the beef submitted by the Brazilian authorities was the only option.

"This decision is vindicates the campaigning of everyone who has been calling a ban on imports which do not measure up to the standards expected within the EU. It is vital that we protect both consumers and our producers from beef that falls below the standards that are required by law here.

"I particularly want to congratulate the IFA for their tenacious campaign based on the findings of a survey into the conditions pertaining within the Brazilian beef sector." ENDS
