Greens on board for Government control of future tribunals
Commenting on the Government's amendment to the Private Members motion on the Mahon Tribunal, and speaking in advance of the Dáil debate, Sinn Féin Dáil leader said the Green Party was now "fully on board for the Government's plan to control all future tribunals".
"The Government amendment to the motion includes an endorsement of the Tribunals of Inquiry Bill 2005. While reform of tribunals is necessary, especially in relation to exorbitant costs and fees, this Bill would effectively give the Government the power to suspend or dissolve a Tribunal for unlimited reasons and to prevent the publication of a Tribunal's report. In our view this is completely unacceptable and will not instil any confidence amongst either the general public or more crucially those who have been specifically affected and are seeking the full truth about events."
Deputy Ó Caoláin said the Sinn Féin TDs would be opposing the Government amendment. (He is scheduled to speak in the debate on Thursday morning.)
