Orde slammed over TASER fears
Sinn Féin Policing Board Member, Martina Anderson MLA has called for the immediate withdrawal of controversial TASER weapons here following new concerns about their safety.
Ms Anderson said:
"New research from America has found that TASER guns may not be as safe as their manufacturer claims. The team in Chicago's Cook County hospital stunned 11 pigs with TASER guns and every animal was left with heart rhythm problems. Two of them later died.
"This study certainly supports what we and a wide range of international human rights organisations have been saying all along - these weapons are lethal.
"Indeed, the PSNI's own internal guidelines for the use of TASER confirm that certain categories of people are at heightened risk of serious negative health effects from these weapons.
"These groups include children, pregnant women, people under the influence of drugs, people with heart conditions and mental illness.
"We already know that Hugh Orde has already ignored the warnings of the Policing Board, The Human rights Commission, the Children's Law Centre and a host of other respected human rights organisations.
"However, it seems he is also ignoring the medical evidence contained in the PSNI's own internal guidelines and he needs to abandon this scheme now before someone needlessly loses their life." ENDS
