Cuts plan for North East is blueprint for whole State – Ó Caoláin
Commenting on the revelation in the Irish Medical News, published today (4/2/08) that the plan for cuts in hospital services in the North East region is a blueprint for cuts around the country, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said:
"Today's Irish Medical News reveals that the December meeting of the Board of the HSE was told that the plan for cuts in hospital services in the North East region will be used as a blueprint for cuts in other regions throughout the State. There has been justifiable outrage in Cos. Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Meath at the revelation last week of the HSE memo outlining how these cuts will be imposed, with services slashed at every hospital.
"At the same time GPs in the North East are warning that there are not sufficient numbers of them to maintain existing primary care services in the region. Yet the Health Minister and the HSE pretend that they are providing a greatly improved primary care infrastructure which can substitute for the hospital services lost.
"It is a colossal fraud and the Fianna Fáil TDs from the four counties in the North East region will this week be put to the test in the Dáil when they must vote on a motion about this latest scandal in our health services." ENDS
