Lack of compassion from British Home Office shocking - Maskey MLA

5 February, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has expressed shock at the lack of compassion shown by the British Home Office over the case of the East Belfast family Comfort Adefowoju and her family who face deportation.

Mr Maskey said,

"I am shocked that the Home Office have shown little compassion for this young family and for Comfort who has played a positive role in the East Belfast community and are is active in their local church.

"The stress caused to this family has been immense.

"In response to a letter I wrote to the Home Office, at the request of campaigners on this issue, it seems that the department is steadfast and dogmatic in its approach.

"I urge the Home Office to reconsider.

"The family are still being held in Yarl's Wood draconian detention centre in London.

"Sinn Féin is wholly committed to the rights for all our citizens and my party opposes the use of draconian detention centres for anyone in contravention of international human rights laws." Deireadh/Ends
