Seagate – Progress on possible access to European Globalisation Adjustment Fund‏

5 February, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the fact that the Minister of Enterprise and Learning Reg Empey has confirmed in answer to a written question that officials from his Department have been in contact with the European Commission to explore the possibility of assistance from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund which provides assistance to workforces where 1000 people lose their jobs as a result of globalisation.

Mr McCartney said,

"I have received a response to a question submitted to the Minister of Enterprise and Learning stating that they have been in contact with officials from the European Commission with a view to accessing funds to assist those people laid off in Seagate re-enter the work force.

"This fund can be accessed through member states for a financial assistance for employees of companies where over 1000 people have been made redundant. This money can be used to help retrain and to give guidance to employees to help them re-enter the working population as well as providing mobility allowances to allow people to travel to other areas to find employment.

"It is important that all efforts are made to get the people laid off back to work as soon as possible and I believe that this fund is one way in which this can be achieved." ENDS
