Amalgamation of PSNI Domestic Violence, Child Abuse and Missing Person’s Units

5 February, 2008

Sinn Féin Derry City Councillor Maeve McLaughlin has said that she is concerned that the PSNI intend to amalgamate domestic violence victims, child abuse and missing persons under the heading public protection.

Councillor McLaughlin said,

"At the recent District Policing Partnership meeting the matter was raised that the three issues of domestic violence, child abuse and missing persons would now come under the heading of public protection.

"Sinn Féin has opposed this move as in order to devise strategies to tackle these problems we need to know the breakdown of the figures and each should be treated as separate issues.

"These issues have different effects and need to be treated in different ways and to club them together is a retrospective step in terms of dealing effectively with them.

"We will be raising our concerns at every level so that these important issues are not relegated in terms of policing priorities." ENDS
