Level playing field for Irish language media needed - Doherty
Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty commenting on the financial crisis facing Ireland's daily Irish language Newspaper and the Irish language media in general has said that the retention of jobs and the provision of service to Irish speakers must be safeguarded.
"The Irish language media has been doing sterling work and I commend the dedication and committment of its activists.
"I am disappointed to hear of the financial difficulties facing the Irish language media at this time.
"What is now important is that the jobs in Belfast and Donegal are retained and that the Irish language media remains as a service provider to the Irish language community.
"I have spoken to members of Foras na Gaeilge this morning and understand that no decision has been reached on this matter as yet.
"I believe now, more than ever, there is a responsibility on the Assembly and the Irish government to take resolute action, as stated in the Good Friday Agreement, to promote the Irish language.
"I shall be raising this matter at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sport, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs." Críoch
