Demand your Irish language Rights on 16 February - de Brún MEP

6 February, 2008

Speaking from the Assembly today, Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has said that it is important that thousands of people attend the celebratory event for Irish in Belfast on the 16th February.

Ms de Brún said,

"I shall be in Belfast, Saturday 16 February celebrating our language and demanding language rights for the six counties.

"At the moment, the Irish language is growing with the amount of young people choosing to speak it.

"It is clear that the growth of the Irish language, regarding education, the spoken language and the growth of communities, is stronger now than at any time before partition.

"The only way to maintain the growth and development of the Irish language is for it to become embedded in the day-to-day life of all.

"It is also important to celebrate that work that has been done so far.

"February 16th's celebration is a part of this.

"It is important therefore, that thousands of people attend this celebratory event." ENDS
