Ó Snodaigh welcomes Kildare cannabis seizure
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed a reported seizure of over €10million worth of cannabis in County Kildare this morning and the arrest of four men in relation to the find. Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the cannabis market makes up a huge portion of the illegal drugs market in Ireland and is directly linked to rising drug and gun crime.
He said, "This morning's seizure comes quickly after a seizure of cannabis worth over €1million in Ballyfermot in my own constituency. I want to welcome these seizures and congratulate the gardaí involved in both operations.
"While many people would consider cannabis to be at the lower end of the drugs epidemic it is worth noting that the cannabis market makes up a huge portion of the illegal drugs market and is directly linked to rising drug and gun crime. Drug dealers are very protective of their markets be they cannabis, cocaine or heroin markets. They will protect each with whatever force they deem necessary.
"Garda drug squads are currently working under unnecessary pressure due to a lack of resources. With a proper civilianisation of Garda administrative tasks resources could be pumped into the Garda Drug Squads throughout the State. At the moment resources for these drugs squads need to be at least doubled. This must be prioritised." ENDS
