Full Plenary of North South Ministerial Council meeting

6 February, 2008

Speaking in advance of the full plenary meeting of the NSMC tomorrow morning in Dundalk, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said that the meeting marked the latest stage in carrying forward important all-Ireland programmes and work.

Mr McGuinness said:

"Already since last May the North South Ministerial Council has demonstrated clearly the crucial role it has to play in driving forward crucial all-Ireland programmes and work. Tomorrows full plenary meeting in Dundalk represents the latest stage in carrying forward this.

"Already significant progress has been made across a number of infrastructural projects like the upgrading of the road to Derry and Letterkenny, the re-opening of the Ulster Canal and significant progress across sectoral areas like tourism, agriculture and environment. Tomorrow we will seek to make further progress on the important area of child protection across the island. All of this is sensible, practical and necessary work.

"The First Minister Ian Paisley will along with myself represent the Executive while the Taoiseach will lead the Irish Government team." ENDS
