Urgent Action to support Irish language media needed now - Gerry Adams MP MLA

6 February, 2008

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP MLA has called for urgent action from both the Irish government and the Executive to tackle the financial crisis facing the Irish language media and in particular Lá Nua, Ireland's daily Irish Language newspaper.

The Sinn Fein leader said,

"The Irish language media has provided an excellent service to the Irish speaking community.

"The dedication of those who work within the Irish language media has been exemplary.

"I am especially concerned about the apparent difficulties facing Lá Nua. I am avid subscriber and reader of this paper.

"There is an onus on the Irish government and the Executive to make strenuous efforts to protect the jobs in Belfast and Donegal and to ensure that the Irish language media continues to provide its important service to the Irish language community.

"At the heart of this debate and of the efforts to promote the Irish language is the issue of rights. Irish language speakers have rights, the same rights as all other citizens, including the right to employment and service provision.

"I understand that no decision has been reached on this matter by Foras na Gaeilge.

"I hope to see an urgent and satisfactory outcome to this issue." Críoch
