Aer Lingus decision on Irish should be reversed - de Brún MEP

6 February, 2008

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has called for Aer Lingus to reverse its decision not to use its usual Irish greeting on board Belfast flights.

Ms de Brún said,

"The fact of the matter is that the Irish language is a threat to no-one and is the property of all the people on the island of Ireland.

"Many Northern residents already fly out to a variety of destinations from Dublin and are not in any way put off by the announcement in Irish.

"People from across the political spectrum have indicated that they would not have any difficulty with Aer Lingus carrying an Irish language announcement on its Belfast flights.

"The St Andrews agreement provides safeguards for the Irish language and businesses should be reminded of this.

"Aer Lingus should know that multilingualism and multiculturalism should be championed rather than lambasted.

"Sinn Féin have written to Aer Lingus and await a response." Críoch
