Orde under fire over Tasers and Omagh
Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson launched a blistering attack on PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde at today's Policing Board meeting.
Speaking afterwards, Ms. Anderson said:
"The shambolic and arrogant way in which Hugh Orde introduced Tasers despite the objections of the Policing Board is reprehensible.
"By ploughing ahead with this decision, he has ignored the warnings of the Board, The Human Rights Commission, the Children's Law Centre and a host of other respected human rights organisations.
"He has also ignored the Board's human rights advice and even the PSNI's own internal guidelines which state that certain categories of people are at greater risk of serious negative health effects from Tasers.
"Therefore, I have again called on him to immediately withdraw these lethal weapons from use."
Turning to the Omagh bomb investigation, Ms. Anderson also demanded the immediate suspension of police officers accused of misconduct in the Sean Hoey case.
"It is clear there are certain officers who were involved in a blatant attempt to frame Sean Hoey.
"These officers were involved in the deliberate falsification of evidence and the unjust incarceration of Sean Hoey for over four years.
"They should all be suspended immediately pending the outcome of the Omagh Bomb review." ENDS
