Sinn Féin express grave concern at threatened deportation of Comfort Adefowoju and family

8 February, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has expressed grave concern over the news that East Belfast resident Comfort Adefowoju and her family shall be deported to Nigeria tomorrow (Sat 9 Feb).

The family are currently being held in Yarl's Wood draconian detention centre in London.

Mr Maskey said,

"Comfort Adefowoju and her young family, originally from Nigeria, have settled in Belfast with her children and has played a positive role in the East Belfast community and are is active in their local church.

"The intransigence, lack of compassion and short sightedness on this issue by the British Home Office is astonishing.

"I have actively campaigned on behalf of the family and am deeply concerned at this development.

"Sinn Féin is wholly committed to the rights for all our citizens and my party opposes the use of draconian detention centres for anyone in contravention of international human rights laws.

"This deportation must be halted." Deireadh/Ends
