Clarke condemns Castlewellan attack on ambulance crew

11 February, 2008

South Down Sinn Féin Assembly Member Cllr Willie Clarke has condemned the people responsible for attacking an ambulance crew outside a pub in Castlewellan on Saturday night.

Cllr Clarke said: "I understand that a gang of youths randomly targeted a couple leaving a pub in Castlewellan on Saturday night and at least one person required medical attention.

"When an ambulance arrived at the scene the crew were targeted by the same gang of youths, which prevented them from attending to the injured person who had been knocked unconscious and left lying on the ground.

"This was a despicable attack that has left the local community shocked and angry. It is disgraceful that innocent people out for a night's enjoyment can be targeted in this way and then to make matters worse, ambulance personnel are attacked by the same gang as they attempted to attend to the people who were injured.

"There is a small group of thugs, who are also involved in taking and selling drugs, operating in the Castlewellan area and despite being banned from most of the pubs in the town they are creating havoc at the weekends. They are targeting people in random attacks and a number of individuals have been injured as a result.

"The PSNI must do more to address what is happening and those responsible for these assaults must be brought before the courts." ENDS
