McLaughlin urges Ministers to be more precise in spending projections

11 February, 2008

Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has called on Ministers to be more precise in spending projections as the British Treasury appears to be restricting future access to unspent resources.

Mitchel McLaughlin said:

"There is evidence in the current financial year of departments identifying unused resources earlier than before this allows for reallocation to other areas of need. While this is welcome more precision is required when bidding for Departmental funds, especially as the British Treasury appears to be restricting future access to unspent resources.

"In his statement on the outcome of the December monitoring round, the Finance Minister outlined three possible reasons for the return of underspends by departments. They where, greater efficiencies than previously planned, the overstating of resource bids or a failure to deliver the planned level of public services. I would therefore urge statutory committees to examine the resources returned by their respective departments and question why they have been released and whether they have been returned at the earliest possible opportunity."
