Lenadoon flats – residents must be listened to

12 February, 2008

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Sue Ramsey has said that lives of local people are being made a misery by the actions of a small number of young people.

Following the completion of a community consultation supported by Sinn Fein, Sue Ramsey also called on the Housing Executive and Housing Minister Margaret Ritchie to intervene and end the nightmare of local residents by providing alternative housing and knocking down the flats.

Ms Ramsey said:

"The lives of local residents are being made a misery by a small number of other residents in the flats. This has been going on for years and the Housing Executive have failed to provide a safe and secure housing environment.

"There is now a clear course of action identified following the community consultation. These people want to move and the local community wants these flats demolished.

"We now need an urgent response from the Housing Executive and the Housing Minster.

"We also need to recognise that these types of flats are not the solution to the crisis in social housing and we need to develop effective ways for the Housing Executive to work with local communities to tackle anti-social behaviour." ENDS
