Curriculum Sports Programme
Sinn Féin Councillor Peter Anderson has called for Derry City Council to support the initiative recently launched by Education Minister Caitríona Ruane called the Curriculum Sports Programme.
Councillor Anderson said,
"A new programme aimed at developing physical literacy skills and encouraging participation in sport amongst young children.
"It will involve GAA and IFA qualified coaches working with children aged between eight and twelve in order to develop their skills and give them a firm foundation on which to build.
"These coaches will work with the teachers to provide an agreed programme of training and exercise that will enable young people not to stay fit and healthy but also to participate in team events and build esteem.
"The Ulster Council of the GAA will provide one coach and the IFA will provide two coaches for the Derry City area and all expenses will be covered by the National Governing Bodies of Sport.
"I will be liaising with Derry City Council to ensure that this scheme is given full support." ENDS
