Shooting of Jose Ramos-Horta
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP MLA has extended "best wishes and solidarity" to the President of East Timor Mr. Jose Ramos-Horta who was shot in an attempted coup.
Mr. Adams who has met the East Timor President many times expressed his shock at news of the assassination attempt on President Ramos-Horta, and also on the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
Mr. Adams said:
"The people of East Timor have endured great hardship in recent decades as they have struggled to achieve democracy and freedom.
"The example they set, and the leadership shown by Jose Ramos-Horta justly led to him winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996.
"He is a leader dedicated to the future well being of his people and has demonstrated enormous courage in the face of threats and violence.
"I extend my best wishes and solidarity to him for a speedy recovery." ENDS
