Doherty proposes motion to support Irish Language newspaper Lá Nua

13 February, 2008

Sinn Féin Irish Language Spokesperson Senator Pearse Doherty, in an effort to save financially struggling Irish Language newspaper Lá Nua has proposed that all Government Departments advertise in the paper when appropriate. Senator Doherty proposed a motion to this affect at a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sport, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Speaking afterwards he said, "In an effort to save the Irish Language newspaper Lá Nua I proposed at today's committee meeting a motion that would ensure Government Departments advertise in the newspaper when appropriate as they do in other papers in the state.

"On hearing this afternoon that the paper is in financial difficulty I secured agreement from all parties to sponsor my motion which be taken at the next Committee meeting. However as the paper's closure is imminent the Committee agreed to immediately circulate the motion to all government departments.

"Lá Nua is currently losing €3,000 a week and is due to issue its last edition on February 29th. This will result in the loss of ten jobs. The paper provides an essential daily service to Irish Language speakers throughout the Island. Irish language speakers are entitled to have their news delivered to them in their native tongue just as English speakers have theirs in English. Therefore this paper should be supported as other papers are by having equal access to advertising from Government Departments." ENDS
