Doherty proposes motion to support Irish Language newspaper Lá Nua
Sinn Féin Irish Language Spokesperson Senator Pearse Doherty, in an effort
to save financially struggling Irish Language newspaper Lá Nua has proposed
that all Government Departments advertise in the paper when appropriate.
Senator Doherty proposed a motion to this affect at a meeting of the
Oireachtas Committee on Arts,
Sport, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
Speaking afterwards he said, "In an effort to save the Irish Language
newspaper Lá Nua I proposed at today's committee meeting a motion that would
ensure Government Departments advertise in the newspaper when appropriate as
they do in other papers in the state.
"On hearing this afternoon that the paper is in financial difficulty I
secured agreement from all parties to sponsor my motion which be taken at
the next Committee meeting. However as the paper's closure is imminent the
Committee agreed to immediately circulate the motion to all government
"Lá Nua is currently losing €3,000 a week and is due to issue its last
edition on February 29th. This will result in the loss of ten
jobs. The paper provides an essential daily service to Irish Language
speakers throughout the Island. Irish language speakers are entitled to have
their news delivered to them in their native tongue just as English speakers
have theirs in English. Therefore this paper should be supported as other
papers are by having equal access to advertising from Government
