Save Tallaght Hospital - Crowe
Save Tallaght Hospital– Crowe
Speaking after a picket at Leinster House in support of Tallaght Hospital Sinn Féin representative Seán Crowe appealed to residents from South Dublin and beyond to get behind the campaign to save Tallaght Hospital. Crowe said he is convinced that Mary Harney is determined to undermine the public hospital element of the health services site.
Crowe said, “Tallaght Hospital is currently severely under-staffed and under-funded with shortages in nursing staff, only one accident and emergency consultant and a shortage of anaesthetists. The hospital is currently €18.2 million in the red.
“It is unthinkable that the Minister, with responsibility for the delivery of health services, would allow this situation to continue. However, this is exactly what Minister Harney has done. Not only that but she has actually punished the hospital financially for failing to meet HSE standards of care. To under-fund a hospital and then punish it further for failing to meet standards is absolutely unacceptable.
“The removal of overnight beds for sick children at the hospital marks the end for the children’s hospital meaning soon there will be no beds for sick children on the South side of Dublin. And with the removal of cancer services the hospital will be less than half its originally planned size.
“I am convinced that Mary Harney, in her unrelenting ideological pursuit of a profit led health market in Ireland, is determined to undermine the public hospital element of the health services site.
“At last year’s general election Mary Harney’s PD party were rejected by the Irish people yet Fianna Fáil. Despite this Fianna Fáil saw fit for her to retain the health portfolio to the detriment of local hospitals throughout the state.”
I would appeal to the public, particularly residents in the South side of Dublin and beyond, to get behind the campaign to save Tallaght Hospital. Only by publicly demonstrating our disproval of this Minister and her policies can we save our hospital.” ENDS
