Hospital Closure Protest at Mary Harney’s Office

15 February, 2008

Sinn Féin will be holding a protest against the closure of Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin and the downgrading of Tallaght Hospital at Health Minister Mary Harney's office in Clondalkin Village at 1pm tomorrow, Saturday 16th February.

Speaking ahead of the protest Sinn Féin South Central TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh said:

"I am calling on the Health Minister to guarantee the future of Crumlin Childrens Hospital which has been in doubt since last October following a HSE report on the new central Paediatric Hospital.

"Sinn Féin has no opposition to the establishment of a National Paediatric Centre of Excellence but we are adamant that this should not be at the expense of established local hospital services. Crumlin has a reputation second to none and just last year a new ward for the hospital was opened.

"We are also here today to demand that the Minister instruct the HSE to lift the current recruitment ban. Tallaght accident and emergency has just one consultant despite being the busiest accident and emergency department in the state with 78,000 visits last year.

"There is also one ward in the hospital which is operating with a shortage of seven and a half nurses and there is no indication that these positions will be filled.

"Decisions coming out of the HSE and Department of Health are undermining local services rather than supporting them. This cannot be allowed to continue." CRÍOCH
