Jobs losses in Arnotts disgraceful in time of retail trade pick-up

15 February, 2008

Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan has slammed Arnotts owners for letting go 580 staff on the same day that new figures showed retail sales were picking up strongly.
Morgan said that it was apparent that the company had showed a complete lack of responsibility to its employees. He added that a billion dollars could not be used as an excuse for making workers redundant and putting them and their families at risk of poverty.

Morgan said:

"New figures released just today show that retail sales picked up strongly in December after a drop in previous months, with an annual growth rate in the sector of 4.7%.

"In the wake of these figures it is astonishing to see successful retail outlets like Arnotts letting go such large numbers of staff.

"When employers are suffering downturns, it is common for employees to stick with them and help to bring success back to the company. It's only fair that in times of good fortune, employees benefit. This has not happened in the case of Arnotts.

"The whole situation shows up the lack of responsibility some employers feel towards their staff. This new billion dollar development cannot be used as an excuse to make workers redundant and putting them and their families at risk of poverty.

"The neglect of workers and the profiteering of employers will have to be taken into account in the current round of pay talks." ENDS
