Disabled transport services saved

18 February, 2008

Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed confirmation that door to door transport schemes operated by Disability Action and Bridge Accessible Transport are to continue unchanged.

"Both Disability Action and Bridge Accessible Transport provide vital services to disabled and older people in the city," Ms. Anderson said.

"However, there had been very real concerns that they could lose the contract to provide the service under new regulations which aim to bring all such services across the North up to a high uniformed standard across the North.

"And while anything that improves services is to be welcomed, no-one in Derry could have had any doubt that Bridge and Disability Action are already providing a first-class service to their users.

"Therefore, I lobbied Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy on their behalf and I am delighted at his decision to award the contract Bridge and Disability Action.

"That decision secures a number of badly-needed jobs in the city and guarantees the continuity of a vital, high standard transport service to local disabled and older people." ENDS
