Scrap privatisation plans for Dublin Bus routes - Doherty

18 February, 2008

Sinn Féin Transport Spokesperson Senator Pearse Doherty has welcomed Transport Minister Noel Dempsey’s decision not to privatise Dublin Bus routes.  Speaking today Senator Doherty said privatisation has proved to be detrimental to public services in other sectors and plans to privatise Dublin Bus routes should be scrapped completely.

Senator Doherty said, “I welcome Minister Dempsey’s decision to shelve the privatisation of a number of Dublin Bus routes.  However, I would encourage the Minister to go one step further and scrap these plans completely.

“It is my hope that this decision will now pave the way for the 200 buses that have been blocked pending privatisation to come on stream in the public service.

“Privatisation has been proved to be detrimental to public services in other sectors.  We only have to look to the poor role out of broadband since the privatisation of Eircom or the fiasco that ensued following the privatisation of Aer Lingus to see that privatisation does not work.  Privatisation is also at the heart of the crisis in our two-tier health services.

“I note that the Minister has made his decision to reverse his Government’s privatisation policy at a time when privatisation is not very popular with the public.  While I welcome this move the Government cannot attempt to wash its hands of its privatisation debacles in Transport, Communications and Health to name just a few.” ENDS
