Ó Snodaigh reiterates Sinn Féin support for same sex marriage

18 February, 2008

Speaking after attending The Marriage Equality Launch in the Mansion House today Sinn Féin Equality Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD re-affirmed his party's support for the right of same sex couples to enter into civil partnerships or marriages.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said today, "The Marriage Equality campaign which was launched today is a new initiative in favour of civil marriage for gay and lesbian people. I met with some of the campaign managers last month and on behalf of Sinn Féin I want to give the campaign and its goals my party's full support.

"Sinn Féin supports the right to civil partnerships; however we believe that it should not be seen as a substitute for the right to marry. Full equality for gays and lesbians will be achieved only when same sex couples can enter into either civil partnerships or marriages, according to their own choice." ENDS
