Adams challenges Culture Minister over commitment to the Irish language
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP MLA has today met with Culture Minister Edwin Poots (Monday 18 February) to discuss the ongoing concerns regarding the Irish language.
Mr Adams said:
"I had a frank meeting with Edwin Poots this afternoon. I raised issues which are of concern to Irish language speakers.
"These issues include; Acht na Gaeilge, the Irish Language Broadcast fund and Lá Nua.
"I relayed to the Minister the scepticism within the Irish language community to the Culture Minister's commitment to their rights, his procrastination and recent public comments against Irish language legislation.
"I maintained that there was a need for the Minister to fulfil his responsibilities in relation to protections for the Irish language.
"I put it to the Minister that the Irish language Broadcast Fund should be continued and enhanced after the first five years which ends in 2009.
"I also raised the issue of the future of Lá Nua. Sinn Féin are fighting for its continuation; the invaluable service it provides to the Irish language community, as well as to safeguard employment.
"Unionists have nothing to fear from the Irish language. Saturday's 'Say Tá to the Irish language rally' showed the vibrancy and inclusiveness of the Irish language community.
"Minister Poots needs to engage positively with Irish speakers." Críoch
