Sinn Féin MEP de Brún questions Gormley on Climate Change and the EU Treaty

20 February, 2008

Responding to Minister Gormley's comments about supporting the Lisbon Treaty because of its impact on climate change, Sinn Féin's member of the European Parliament Committee on Climate Change, Bairbre de Brún has asked the Minister to clarify his words.

"Minister Gormley appears not to realise that the EU is already dealing with climate change. The Lisbon Treaty will not enable the EU to do anything it is not already doing. "

"As a member of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change I have seen at first hand the good work being done at an EU level to tackle Climate Change. The President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso did need to wait for the Lisbon Treaty for his recent announcement of the Commission's proposed plan to tackle climate change over the coming decades.

"I would ask the Minister to clarify his claims."
