de Brún welcomes MEPs' call for action on supermarket abuses
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today welcomed the adoption by the European Parliament of a declaration calling for an investigation into the effect the dominance of large supermarkets is having on local farmers, businesses and consumers.
The written declaration signed by a majority of MEPs including Ms de Brún calls upon the EU Commission to look into such abuses that the dominance of large supermarkets may entail and to propose appropriate measures.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Six County MEP said:
"This initiative which has today won the backing of most MEPs should be welcomed by small businesses, farmers and consumers locally and across the EU. In particular, the Red Meat Task force pointed to this as an issue for farmers at home. By concentrating the retail market into a small number of hands, local industry is forced to play by the rules of these large, often multinational, companies to survive.
This campaign if followed through on by the Commission could help level the playing field."
Note to Editor:
Last year, the Office of Fair Trading found that some supermarkets were operating a form of cartel to the detriment of customers and producers alike.
