Butler calls for all party approach on Lagan Valley Maternity Services

20 February, 2008

Sinn Féin spokesperson, Paul Butler MLA (Lagan Valley) has called for an all-party delegation consisting of MLA's, Councillors the local MP Jeffrey Donaldson and community representatives to meet with Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey to have the decision to close Maternity Services at Lagan Valley hospital reversed.

Paul Butler said;

"Lagan Valley hospital serves a fast growing population taking in areas such as TwinBrook, Lagmore and Poleglass. It records over 1200 births a year and is a vital service in this constituency.

"I believe that if this decision is proceeded with it will put the lives of both mothers and children at risk. The alternative facilities being suggested such as Craigavon are already at breaking point and could not accommodate the additional 1200 plus births presently dealt with at Lagan Valley.

"I am therefore calling on the Minister to facilitate an urgent meeting with the constituency MP, Jeffrey Donaldson, myself, other elected representatives and interested community groups. This illogical decision must be reversed."
