BBC announcement on increased GAA coverage "a step in the right direction"

20 February, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff (West Tyrone) has welcomed a BBC announcement on increased GAA coverage over the next three years as a step in the right direction.

Welcoming the announcement Mr McElduff has said,

"The BBC has said that it intends to show all eight Ulster SFC matches this year.

"This is a positive and welcome development and something which GAA supporters have been campaigning on for a long time.

"I myself met with the BBC Controller Peter Johnston and Shane Glynn to highlight this issue.

"The BBC coverage of the GAA in the past was inadequate and GAA supporters who also subsidise the BBC through their license fees were not being catered for on an equal basis to other sports.

"The GAA is by far the most popular sport throughout Ireland, North and South but was not recognised as such by the BBC.

"I welcome the increased coverage announced by the BBC and I hope it is a sign that the second-class treatment by broadcasters of GAA in comparison to other sports is a thing of the past.

"The lack of radio and television coverage of recent club championship games was commented on by many people and I would like to see equality given to all GAA fixtures." Críoch
