Culture Minister must have respect for all - Anderson MLA

20 February, 2008

Sinn Féin Human Rights spokesperson Martina Anderson MLA, responding to comments made by Culture Minister Edwin Poots that a new gay Rugby team amounts to sporting apartheid, has said that his words are ill-advised.

Ms Anderson said,

"Firstly, I welcome the formation of the Ulster Titans and wish then every success in the future.

"Minister Poots comments are ill-advised. As a Minister he has a moral responsibility to promote the cultural and sporting rights of all sections of society, regardless of sexual orientation.

"The fact is that the rugby club is open to all.

"Any young gay people reading the Minister's comments will be astonished.

"I am minded of comments made by his party colleague Ian paisley Junior last year on homosexuality and urge Minister Poots to have more sensitivity in his statements in the future." Críoch
