Ó Snodaigh in Waterford to launch Safer Communities policy document

21 February, 2008

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD is in Waterford today to launch the party's policy document entitled 'Creating Safer Communities'. Speaking at the launch of the document Deputy Ó Snodaigh said Sinn Féin is engaging with communities throughout the state in an information gathering exercise which will help to inform Sinn Féin's future policies on policing and community safety.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "Last year, for the first time, Sinn Féin published a submission to the Garda Policing Plan for 2008. As well calling for more accountable community policing we put an emphasis on tackling drug and gun crime.

"In addition to the submission we published a complimentary set of proposals to create safer communities through better estate management in partnership with communities.

"Today we are meeting with resident and community groups from throughout Waterford to highlight our proposals but also to take on board the view of local communities. This process is being replicated by Sinn Féin members throughout the State and I am personally travelling to a number of Counties on an information gathering exercise. This exercise will help to inform Sinn Fein's future policies on policing and community safety issues including our submission to next year's policing plan.

"We also have a meeting planned with the Chief Superintendent Pat Duggan. In our view statutory agencies, local Councils, the Gardaí and communities themselves including private landlords each have a role to play in creating safe communities. And they should work in equal partnership to achieve this goal. We will be relaying this to the Superintendent while also raising concerns about drug deaths in the City and any other concerns that residents might raise with us throughout the course of the day."
