Clear support for transfer of Policing and Justice

22 February, 2008

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Policing and Justice Alex Maskey MLA has said that a poll published today showing clear support from all sections of the community for the transfer of powers by May, supports the evidence coming from local people and undermines the myth that community confidence was not present for such a move.

Mr Maskey said:

"I have to say over the course of the past year through my work on the Policing Board I have met countless groups and individuals with an interest in this issue. The overwhelming majority see the logic of the transfer of power to locally elected politicians and see the benefits it will have in delivering a truly accountable and effective service.

"Some unionists for their own narrow political interests have tried to hide behind the myth that community confidence for the transfer of powers is not there. This poll supports the views coming back from local people and undermines the myth about lack of public confidence. People want local politicians taking decisions. That is the whole point of the Assembly and the Executive.

"It is now important that the two governments press ahead with transferring powers on Policing and Justice away from London and into the hands of locally elected and accountable politicians." ENDS
