Gildernew goes ploughing at Mullahead
Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has paid a visit to the 94th Mullahead and District Ploughing Championships at Gilford.
The Minister was welcomed by Mr Samuel Neill, Chairman of the Mullahead and District Ploughing Society who introduced her to fellow members and took her on a tour of the site at Moyallen House. During the visit she had the opportunity to speak with competitors, view trade exhibits and visit the Food Marquee, where she met a number of local producers.
Acknowledging the hard work of the event organisers and the local community, the Minister said:
"It is no surprise that long established events of this kind still mean so much to rural communities. As well as being a corner stone of the competitive ploughing calendar, these championships provide an opportunity to highlight to the public all that is good about farming and food here. I would like to commend the organisers and their sponsors on a job well done."
The Minister also took the opportunity to try her hand at ploughing. Commenting on the experience, she said:
"It was great to have been given this opportunity today. I have never ploughed before, and certainly never imagined trying it out for the first time in front of such an illustrious audience. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and welcomed the expert advice on hand." ENDS
