South Belfast MLA welcomes Housing allocation for Village

26 February, 2008

South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has today welcomed the £7 million allocation to help address the chronic housing conditions in the Village area as a good start.

Mr Maskey said:

"A number of weeks ago along with other South Belfast representatives I joined residents of the Village at a protest on the steps of Stormont to demand that Margaret Ritchie takes urgent steps to address the chronic housing conditions in that area.

"This had come after I had joined the residents at a protest last year in the Village where I heard at first hand of the sub standard housing that these people were living in. I was touched then by the almost helplessness of their situation and was pleased to be able to stand with them and from then on to lobby on their behalf.

"Over the past few months I have repeatedly raised questions in the Assembly relating to the Village and how Margaret Ritchie intended to address the need in the area.

"I therefore welcome today's announcement as a good start and am glad that the Minister has listened to the residents of the Village." ENDS
