Essential child mental health services must be restored in Cavan Monaghan – Ó Caoláin

26 February, 2008

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has called on the Minister for Health Mary Harney to ensure that essential resources are provided to restore mental health services in Cavan and Monaghan after the HSE North East announced that it will only accept urgent or emergency psychiatric referrals from GPs.

Speaking in the Dáil today Deputy Ó Caoláin said, "Contrary to what Mary Harney said when the HSE recruitment freeze was announced these cutbacks are most certainly having a damaging effect on patient care.

"The announcement by the HSE North East that it will only accept urgent or emergency child psychiatric referrals from GPs in Cavan and Monaghan for at least the next four months requires an immediate response from the Minister.

"Minister Harney must ensure that essential resources are provided restore vital services not just in Cavan and Monaghan but throughout the State." ENDS
